Why You’re Probably Deficient In Zinc

It’s been said that over 1.1 billion people are dangerously deficient in Zinc. 

But there are some groups of people whose chances of having low levels of Zinc are multiplied because of their lifestyle factors.

Suppose you have gastrointestinal or other diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, short bowel syndrome, chronic renal disease, diabetes, and even liver disease. In that case, your body has a decreased ability to absorb Zinc. You also have increased endogenous Zinc loss because of impaired GI tract and kidneys. 

Vegetarians are also more likely to have low Zinc levels as the bioavailability of this mineral is lower than in non-vegetarian diets. They also eat many legumes and whole grains containing phytates that bind zinc and inhibit absorption.

Pregnant and lactating women also have higher chances of being deficient in Zinc. The high fetal requirements for Zinc mean the mothers are left with little for themselves. 

If you drink alcohol a lot, know that 30% to 50% of alcohol drinkers have low levels of Zinc. It’s because ethanol consumption decreases intestinal absorption of Zinc and increases urinary zinc excretion.

Whether or not you’re in any of these groups, it’s still vital to have healthy Zinc levels in your body for its various benefits. Simply eating meat or taking just any Zinc supplement isn’t the most innovative option, nor is it enough.
