How Firm Is Your Grip?

Recent studies suggest that grip strength is a crucial marker for healthy aging.

This is because your grip can tell you how developed your muscle mass is and how optimal your muscles are at doing their job. 

As we age, our muscles begin to decline. This is sarcopenia. Age-related muscle loss can lead to medical complications, health risks, and even early death. 

I listened to an interview between Dr. Andrew Hubermann and Dr. Peter Attia about methods, secrets, and techniques for longevity. Some of the critical factors Dr. Peter Attia and his longevity-focused company measure are a person’s actual health by being able to perform basic body movement exercises for a certain amount of time. 

Examples are the dead hang (hanging from a bar for a period), farmer’s carry exercise (carrying your body weight’s worth of additional weight and walking around for a few minutes), and more. A common factor in these exercises is, of course, your grip strength. 

You can try easier and simpler versions of these exercises at home (make sure to speak with your physician about it first) if you’re curious about how well your grip strength performs under these circumstances.

FIGHT ACCELERATED AGING

Another study published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society looks at over 5,000 women who were part of the Long Life Study. 

Their health markers were assessed over five years and included weight loss and gain, grip strength, balance, and gait speed. 

The results were shocking. 

Increased mortality was seen in those who experienced weight loss but not with weight gain. Higher grip strength was associated with longer life regardless of weight change. Lastly, balance and gait speed played a massive role in longevity — particularly when combined with grip strength. 

“What this shows us is that the focus for older women shouldn’t be on weight loss as a way to extend their lives, but instead on improving mobility and muscle strength,” says lead author Lisa Underland, DO, at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York. “Higher physical functioning and higher grip strength were associated with lower mortality and lower risk of cardiovascular events, independent of weight change.”

This changes everything. While weight is essential to manage, it is somehow not as important as overall muscle strength, function, and physical mobility.
